keylist
{
modkey = {"Mod4", "Shift"}
command = "client_tag"
keylist = { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 }
arglist = { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 }
}

Hi,
Which key do you use as Mod4?
Is it by any chance the key at the left of "a" commonly used as caps lock?
Comment by johannes wegener (joyfm) - Monday, 17 March 2008, 16:57 GMT
yes I'm doing this with xmodmap
(clear lock
add mod4 Caps_Lock)
...

why doesn't that work?

I don't know why that doesn't work, but I encoutered this issue several months ago and I think that it's a bug in xorg rather than in awesome.
I think it's xorg bug #12394, see
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12394

It's probably a limitation of the keyboard - the switch matrix inside the keyboard does not allow for proper detection of all 3-key-combinations. See e.g. http://babbage.cs.qc.edu/courses/cs345/Manuals/ms_scancode.pdf for a list of key combinations which are required to work by microsoft. Or http://www.dribin.org/dave/keyboard/one_html/ for a description of the problem. (All links just found by google and selected arbitrarily)
